An 85-unit luxury apartment complex is being built at the former regional headquarters for
Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph in downtown West Palm Beach.

Construction began Nov. 22 on the Alexander Lofts, scheduled to open next fall at Fern Street and South
Dixie Highway. Rents will start at $1,200 per month.

The six-story vacant building received a historic designation in 2008.

The developer is Ram, an affiliated group of companies based in Palm Beach Gardens. It says this is the
first professionally managed apartment complex in downtown West Palm since the recession.

Ram is seeking qualifications from artists to create a mural on the eastern side of the 86,000-square-foot
building. The deadline is Friday. The winning artist will be announced in January.
